I sat in the back of the class, away from all the attention. While other kids raised their hands and sometimes the answers were right and sometimes they were wrong, all of the right answers were scribbled down in my notebook. "You come across someone with a severed limb, what do you do?" The teacher asked. Everyone in the room made fake gagging noises as I wrote down the answer waiting for someone else to answer. "I'm serious. Now who in here has a real answer? Katrina?" I looked up at the teacher as she said my name. Without even looking around the room, I can feel the whole class shift to look at me. I swallowed hard and looked down at my paper before looking back up at the teacher. "The best thing to do is to tie a tourniquet at the artery above where the limb has been severed and keep the limb above the level of the heart. If you can find the rest of the limb you should try to preserve it, if possible." I answered. Now I could feel the other student's eyes burning into me. "Correct. Now would you please come up front and show us all how to make a tourniquet on our dummy." Dr. Summers asked. I slowly stood up and walked to the front of the room. I quietly, with a bit of hidden nerves, but effortlessly, made a simple tourniquet.
